PBS NC's ncIMPACT spent a day at Fayetteville Technical Community College's Swift Water Rescue Training Facility, the first indoor facility of its kind on the East Coast. At its center is a 140,000-gallon training tank designed and built by Fathom Tanks. In the video, the host plays a victim trapped in a sinking vehicle while a rescue crew works to reach them by boat.
Inside the Fathom Tank
- Adjustable water speed, depth, flow direction and temperature
- Day or night conditions, plus simulated rain, thunder and lightning
- Submerged vehicles for real extrication scenarios
- Clean, filtered water for training all year
Agencies from across the region, and from other states, now train here. That includes the Lakeland, Florida police dive team, which earned its high-water rescue certifications at FTCC after Hurricane Milton.
