Flash flooding occurred in Birmingham metropolitan area and surrounding Jefferson County in Alabama, USA, after heavy rain on 19 July 2021. Roads were blocked and fire fighters carried out rescues with boats.
Vehicles were stranded on flooded roads and emergency services urged motorists to avoid driving through flooded areas. Roads were closed in several locations across due Birmingham metropolitan area.
Rocky Ridge Fire District said it has multiple units out, including a boa, working on multiple flash flood related calls.
“We have cars and a commercial structure with flooding along with several streets that are currently impassable that include: Acton Road 2500-2700 block. Intersection of Acton Road and Old Rocky Ridge Road, 2900 block of Old Rocky Ridge Road and 2600 Block of Altadena Road. Please drive with care and avoid these streets until the water recedes,” the department said via Social Media.
Flash flood warnings were issued for Jefferson and Shelby counties on 19 July 2021. National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham, Alabama, said, “Backyard weather stations south of Birmingham, in Jefferson County, range from 3″ to 8″ (76 mm to 203 mm )of rain since midnight. More rain is moving in.”
