SYDNEY, N.S. — Parts of Sydney were again hit with heavy flooding following rain and wind warnings from Environment Canada.
The intense low-pressure system that dumped heavy snowfall in Quebec and Ontario on Monday and Monday evening brought strong, gusty winds and periods of heavy rain to Cape Breton.
Rainfall amounts totalled 50 mm in Sydney and St. Anns, 57 mm in Ingonish Beach, 44 mm in Port Morien and 27 mm in Port Hawkesbury, according to Environment Canada’s weather summary. An additional 5 mm is falling throughout the day Tuesday.
Plateau, Cape Breton boasted the highest wind gusts in the province at 170 km/h, St. Joseph du Moine just behind at 167 km/h, Grand Etang Harbour at 156 km/h and Eskasoni First Nation at 113 km/h, according to Environment Canada. Sydney Airport wind speeds reached 87 km/h while the Highlands National Park and Port Hawkesbury both reached hit 85 km/h winds.
