The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Soar in Leicestershire following days of rain.

Residents and drivers have been warned today water levels are starting to rise in the Sileby and Mountsorrel areas and that more showers are forecast in coming days.

In a statement issued this morning, the agency said: "Be prepared. River levels have risen at the Pillings Lock river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland has started this morning.
"Areas most at risk are low-lying agricultural land and roads including Slash Lane at Sileby and the Mountsorrel to Sileby road.
"Further rainfall is forecast through today. We are closely monitoring the situation.
"Please plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded and avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses."
